A city break is not a number of nights. It is a number of usable hours, and the flights and transfers take a predictable share before you have chosen a single thing to do.
What two nights actually gives you
Friday evening flight, Sunday evening return:
| Segment | Cost |
|---|---|
| Friday evening | Arrival, dinner — half an evening |
| Saturday | Full day |
| Sunday | Morning only, minus check-out |
Roughly one and a half usable days. That is the honest figure, and it is what a two-night break is.
A Friday morning departure instead of an evening one adds a whole day for the price of one night's accommodation, which is usually the best-value change available.
The transfer, which people ignore
Airport-to-centre times vary from twelve minutes to over an hour, and on a short break that difference matters more than the flight length.
| City | Airport to centre |
|---|---|
| Málaga | 12 min train |
| Lisbon | 20 min metro |
| Vienna | 16 min express |
| Amsterdam | 15 min train |
| Rome Fiumicino | 32 min express |
| Paris Beauvais | 75+ min coach |
| Milan Bergamo | 50+ min coach |
A cheap flight into a distant secondary airport can cost four hours of a weekend in transfers. Price the transfer alongside the fare.
Which cities suit two nights
Compact, walkable, close airport.
Porto, Kraków, Ljubljana, Bruges, Seville, Valencia, Bologna, Tallinn.
All have centres you can cross on foot in twenty minutes, which means no time lost to internal transport.
Which need three
Rome, Berlin, Barcelona, London, Paris, Istanbul.
Not because there is more to see — there is, everywhere — but because the sights are spread out and crossing the city costs 30–40 minutes each time.
Three crossings in a day is two hours underground, which is what makes a two-night trip to Rome feel like an airport experience.
The one-night question
Rarely worth it, except where the flight is under 90 minutes and the transfer is under 20.
Otherwise you spend more time in transit than in the city.
Practical decisions that buy hours
Hand luggage only. Saves 30–45 minutes at each end and the fee.
Stay centrally, even at a premium. On a short break the walk saved is worth more than the money.
Book the timed sites before flying. Turning up at the Alhambra or the Sagrada Família without a ticket wastes the trip's whole point.
Pick a neighbourhood, not a list. Two districts explored properly beats six sights ticked at a run.
Off-season
The same break costs 30–50% less between November and March, and city breaks are the one trip type where winter genuinely does not hurt — the museums, restaurants and bars are the point, and they are all indoors.
